CLICKACTION WORKING CLOSELY WITH AUTHORITIES IN INVESTIGATION OF POLITICAL
SPAM ATTACK
PALO ALTO, Calif. (October 12, 2000) ClickAction Inc. (Nasdaq:
CLAC),
a leader in permission-based email marketing/e-messaging, announced today
that it is working closely with the FBI and a number of Internet Service Providers
to determine the parties responsible for a series of sophisticated "Spam
Attacks" in which millions of unauthorized emails have been sent over
the past few days from a variety of third party email servers to unsuspecting
email users around the world. These illegal emails included references to
a ClickAction hosted web site, but are neither sent nor authorized in any
way by the Company.
The "Spam Attacks" began on Monday and have continued through today.
An unidentified third party hacked into and hijacked numerous Internet Service
Providers email servers. They then used the hijacked servers to send
the bogus email to a large number of unsuspecting recipients.
"ClickAction is a founding member of RECA, the Responsible Electronic
Communication Alliance, and is a member of TRUSTe, an independent, non-profit
organization whose mission is to build users trust and confidence in
the Internet," said Gregory Slayton, president and CEO of ClickAction.
"We have built a great company by adhering to the highest standards of
privacy in email marketing, and we will never compromise the privacy and security
principles that we ourselves helped frame for this industry. We are actively
working with the FBI to determine the perpetrator or perpetrators of this
crime."
Eric Fagan, Network Administrator for Cox Communications, an independent Internet
Service Provider unrelated to ClickAction, first saw evidence of the "Spam
Attacks" on Monday. "It is clearly the work of a motivated professional:
a very sophisticated and expensive effort. The perpetrators have been mapping
our network," continued Mr. Fagan, "to determine which of our customers
email servers they could utilize. On Monday they hijacked a number of those
servers to send the fraudulent emails. We are cooperating with the FBIs
investigation."
"One person in Alaska reported to us that he has now received the forged
email numerous times from a third party server," continued Slayton. "But
that gentleman, along with all the people that have complained to us about
receiving these forged emails, has not been emailed by our Company. Clearly
this is the work of some highly motivated person or group that is deliberately
trying to both embarrass and discredit ClickAction. ClickAction maintains
the highest level of security and privacy, and our networks are secure and
operating normally. We will defend our Company and email users everywhere
to the fullest extent of the law from these illegal and completely unethical
"Spam Attacks."
